Embrace the Gift of Wisdom:
In James 1:5, we are reminded that “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” There is no shame in seeking wisdom—God delights in giving us wisdom! But, how often do we allow ourselves to be distracted, relying on our own limited understanding rather than tapping into the unlimited wisdom of our Creator? Today, we ask God for wisdom. We seek understanding that goes beyond human knowledge and into divine revelation.

As we move forward in our study, let us also recognize that wisdom and understanding are closely intertwined. Ephesians 1:17 prays for the “spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.” This is the essence of our spiritual renewal—the more we grow in knowledge of God, the more we understand His will for our lives, and with that understanding comes the strength to carry out His purpose. But what is understanding, and how do we cultivate it?

Seek Understanding:
Understanding, in the context of our spiritual journey, means a deeper grasp of God’s truth, and His Word. In Proverbs 3:5-6, we are instructed, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” This passage invites us to trust fully in the Lord and to surrender our own limited understanding. It challenges us to take the time to seek understanding through prayer, study, and reflection on His Word, knowing that He will make our paths straight.

We also know that the gifts of the Holy Spirit empower us to be a light in the world, as we apply what we have learned. Let us remember the words of Romans 12:6-8—our gifts are not for ourselves alone. They are given for the edification of the Body of Christ. As we grow in wisdom and understanding, we are called to apply those gifts in service to others, building up the church and spreading the love of Christ to those around us.

Fortitude and Strength:
I want to highlight the gift of fortitude, or courage. The Spirit empowers us to stand firm in faith, to endure in the face of trials, and to remain steadfast even when challenges arise. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” This is the promise we hold onto as we walk through life’s ups and downs. It is through Christ that we have the strength to persevere and to overcome. This is the fortitude we need, not just to survive, but to thrive.

Let us not forget the importance of piety—a deep reverence for God. This gift fosters in us a heart that loves God deeply and seeks to honor Him in all we do. As we grow in piety, we develop a sensitivity to His voice, a desire to be in His presence, and an awareness of His holiness. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” His Word illuminates the way, and it is our piety—our devotion to Him—that draws us closer to that light.

Fear of the Lord:
As we walk in His presence, we must also cultivate the gift of the fear of the Lord—a profound respect and awe for God’s majesty. It is this fear that keeps us humble before Him, understanding that He is sovereign over all. Isaiah 11:2 speaks of the Spirit of the Lord that rests upon us, giving us wisdom, understanding, counsel, and the fear of the Lord. It is this fear that leads to wisdom and guides our actions in all things.
