The Role of the Holy Spirit

Unveiling Divine Truth

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in revealing the truth of God’s Word. As John 16:13 states, the Spirit of truth guides us into all truth, speaking only what He hears from God and showing us things to come.

From the youth of Joseph to his final days, the Holy Spirit provided wisdom and guidance, akin to a shepherd leading his flock, as illustrated in Psalms 80:1-2. This divine guidance is promised to us as well, ensuring we understand God’s truth without distortion.

Understanding the Bible requires the Holy Spirit’s revelation. According to 2 Timothy 3:16, all Scripture is inspired by God and is beneficial for teaching us what is true and correcting our wrongs. The Spirit makes this understanding possible.

John 16:13

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Howbeit, when the Spirit of truth is come

On the essence of the Spirit, see ( John 14:17 ) . His arrival, as mentioned previously, primarily refers to his visit to the apostles during Pentecost, but the significance of his presence extends beyond that moment, impacting all who experience his divine power and grace. His influence goes beyond the apostles at Pentecost, shaping the lives of individuals throughout history and touching hearts in incomprehensible ways. His work is ongoing and widespread, impacting believers in every generation and guiding them towards a deeper understanding of their faith.

he will guide you into all truth;

Essential for understanding, beneficial to individuals, advantageous to churches, encompassing the complete wisdom of God; covering worship, its essence, structure, and spiritual aspect, along with teachings. He serves as a wise and guiding presence, leading the way, clearing obstacles, enlightening minds, simplifying complexities, imparting valuable lessons, and directing individuals on the right path, preventing them from straying off course. Those born-from-above hold the fervid belief that the Holy Ghost serves as a knowledgeable and insightful guide, leading individuals towards wisdom and understanding in life and in the Word of God. Non-believers often grasp a notion of the Spirit, witnessed in the carnal, knowing and tugging at their own conscience yearnings and guilt, glimpsing the guide into all wisdom and knowledge.

For he shall not speak of himself:

Just as Christ, the Son, did not speak of himself in opposition to the Father, the Spirit also does not speak of himself in opposition to either the Father or the Son, but in perfect agreement with both. They share the same nature, essence, power, and glory, as well as the same mind, understanding, and will. Just as they worked jointly and harmoniously in the works of nature and providence, they continue to do so in the economy of grace and salvation, showcasing their unity and cooperation in all aspects of divine work.

But whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak;

as Christ himself did, ( John 15:15 ) ; and they are such incomprehensible truths that the human mind struggles to fathom, the ear has not heard; revelations made in the divine council and covenant of peace, unanimously agreed upon by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; matters pertaining to the eternal destiny of humanity, the establishment of the Gospel church, the mysteries of the afterlife, and the magnificence of the divine beings themselves.

and he will show you things to come;

After the death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ, the state and settlement of the Gospel church would be impacted, with the partition wall broken down and the law of commandments contained in ordinances abolished. A new era would emerge in the kingdom and interest of Christ, as a result of the Spirit being sent forth and poured down. The apostles’ spirit of prophecy would reveal future events such as the rise of the man of sin, the departure from the faith, the declining power of godliness in the last days, the calling of the Jews, the destruction of antichrist, the burning of the world, and the creation of new heavens and new earth. The church of Christ and religion would evolve through various time periods until the coming of Christ, where dead saints would be raised and living ones changed, as detailed in the book of Revelation.
