The explanation he had given of the opposition and hatred of the world, the consolation promised in the identification with himself, and the witness borne by the Paraclete all form part of the preparatory instructions based on his Person, his going to the Father, and his return in the power of the Spirit. Nor can any man draw nigh God as a Father, who is not quickened by Him as the Life, and taught by Him as the Truth, to come by Him as the Way. By Christ, as the Way, our prayers go to God, and his blessings come to us; this is the Way that leads to rest, the good old Way.

The holiness of the God of power shone in the spotless purity of Christ’s life. We are called to have faith in the divine revelation of God to humanity through Christ; as the actions of the Redeemer illuminate his own magnificence, reflecting the presence of God within him. Through these works, the glory of God is made manifest, drawing us closer to the profound truth of His presence in our lives.

God’s love for obedient believers goes beyond mere affection; it is a deep, abiding pleasure that he takes in loving them wholeheartedly. His love is a place of solace and rest for those who follow him faithfully, a safe haven where they can find refuge and comfort. Just as a home provides shelter and warmth, God’s love envelops obedient believers, offering them security and peace in his presence. Embracing the peace of God means embarking on a journey of inner growth and spiritual enlightenment, where true peace is found in the presence of divine grace and guidance.
Consider the deep insight into the forthcoming battle that Christ had, preparing to face not only human adversaries but also dark supernatural forces. Satan, the cunning adversary, finds ways to perplex and tempt us, exploiting our inherent human flaw of sin. We each carry the burden of past transgressions, a universal reality that contributes to our vulnerability to his deceitful schemes; but when he would disturb Christ, he found nothing sinful to help him, leading him to a deeper understanding of Christ’s pure and unwavering nature.
Our true devotion to the Father shines through most authentically when we follow His commandments with unwavering obedience and commitment. It is in our actions, in our daily choices and interactions, that we demonstrate the depth of our love for Him. Each moment presents an opportunity to showcase our faith and loyalty, to honor the teachings and guidance He has provided. By aligning our lives with His will, we embody the essence of true love and devotion to the Father, showcasing our unwavering commitment to His divine path.

Let us carry his example in our hearts and minds, inspiring us to spread love and practice obedience in all aspects of our daily lives.
ABIDE IN HIS LOVE
What does John 15 teach us? John 15 teaches us that love is sacrificial, humble, and constant. It emphasizes that offering one’s life for the sake of others is the ultimate expression of this love. Jesus clarifies that Christian love is not solely about grand gestures but should instead be the guiding principle of our entire lives. Are you connected to the true vine? Remaining connected to the vine, Jesus Christ, is crucial if we desire to bear fruit. By maintaining a relationship with Jesus through spending time in the Word and obeying His teachings, we can stay connected to him as branches to the vine. In His final teaching to His disciples, Jesus highlights that obedience to Him not only signifies our friendship and discipleship but also leads to experiencing the joy of our salvation. Through obedience, we remain in Christ and bring glory to God. Jesus expects us to abide in Him, as stated in John 15:4-5 where he urges us to remain in him as he remains in us. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless connected to the vine, we too must abide in Him to bear fruit in our lives.
Explore the profound symbolism of Christ as the true Vine, representing strength, growth, and connection within the Christian faith. Just as a vine branches out and bears fruit, Christ provides nourishment and spiritual guidance to those who abide in Him. Embrace the image of Christ as the ultimate source of life and sustenance, leading believers to flourish in their journey of faith. Let the immortal bond between Christ and His followers inspire you to deepen your roots and produce abundant blessings in the vineyard of God’s kingdom. (1-8) His deep affection and devotion towards his loyal disciples. (9-17) foretold. (18-25) The Comforter promised an unending source of peace and guidance, a beacon of hope in times of uncertainty, and a trustworthy ally in the journey of life. (26,27)
Our connection to Christ is like a hidden root that nourishes and sustains our entire being. Just as the root supports and supplies the tree with essential sap, so too does Christ provide us with all that we need for life and growth. In Him, we find strength, stability, and abundance, ensuring that we can flourish and thrive in every season. The branches of the vine are numerous, yet as they come together in the root, they form a single vine. In the same way, true Christians, despite being far apart in location and beliefs, unite in Christ.
Believers, like the branches of the vine, are weak and dependent, finding their strength and support in being upheld by a higher power. Just as the vine sustains and nourishes its branches, believers rely on their faith to keep them standing firm and secure in their beliefs. The Father, as the Husbandman, displays unparalleled wisdom and vigilance in tending to his vineyard. God’s constant care and attention to his church ensure its prosperity beyond measure. We should aim to mirror the virtues we admire in others. Just as a grapevine bears fruit, a follower of Christ should demonstrate a Christ-like attitude, demeanor, and lifestyle. Ultimately, our actions speak louder than our words, and our character should reflect the values we hold dear.
We are called to honor God through our actions, by doing good deeds that bear fruit in our lives and the lives of others. As we strive to live out our faith, we are reminded that our choices have the power to impact the world around us for the better. Let us continue to sow seeds of kindness and compassion, knowing that through our actions, we are fulfilling our purpose to glorify God and spread His love to all we encounter. The unfruitful are removed, and even fruitful branches must undergo pruning; for even the most righteous individuals possess ideas, desires, and moods that must be eliminated in order to further the sanctification process promised by Christ for believers. They will express gratitude for this refinement.
The word of Christ is a powerful and transformative message that reaches all believers. It carries with it a cleansing virtue that has the ability to instill grace within individuals, while simultaneously purging them of corruption. And as we continue to produce more fruit, our lives become richer in goodness, and our Lord is further honored. To achieve a bountiful harvest, we need to remain connected to Christ and have a steadfast belief in Him. By maintaining this close relationship and unwavering faith, we are able to bear even more fruit and bring glory to our Lord.
It is imperative for every follower of Christ to maintain a strong sense of reliance on Him and to continuously engage in a deep connection with Him. Maintaining a consistent dependence and spiritual bond with Christ is essential for all believers, as it helps to strengthen their faith and nurture their relationship with Him. By staying connected to Christ and seeking guidance from Him, disciples can experience His love, guidance, and presence in their lives, leading to a deeper understanding of their faith and a closer walk with Him.
True Christians understand from personal experience that any break in their devotion leads to a decline in their spiritual fervor, a resurgence of sinful inclinations, and a dampening of their sense of peace and joy. It is not that God changes, but rather that our own actions convict us of our sins. The unchanging nature of God stands in stark contrast to our own inconsistency and need for repentance. Those who abide not in Christ, though they may flourish for awhile in outward profession, yet come to nothing. The fire is the fittest place for withered branches; they are good for nothing else.
Let us strive to live in the abundance of Christ, allowing His love to overflow in our lives and bear fruit through our words and actions. As we deepen our connection with Him, may our joy in His presence and the gift of salvation He offers us be truly complete.
The fleeting joy of the hypocrite pales in comparison to the everlasting and abundant joy experienced by those who remain grounded in Christ’s love. They are called to demonstrate their love for him by obediently following his commandments. Without the same divine power that originally spread the love of Christ in our hearts, sustaining us in that love, we would not endure in it for very long.
Christ’s love for us should serve as a guide to loving one another. Although He appears to be addressing numerous responsibilities, He emphasizes this particular command. This directive encompasses a variety of obligations that we are called to fulfill.
The name in which Christ’s disciples were baptized is the foundation of their faith, guiding their every step and decision. It provides solace and strength to those enduring the greatest hardships, knowing that they are suffering for the sake of Christ’s name.
The ignorance that permeates the world fuels its animosity towards the followers of Jesus, highlighting the importance of spreading knowledge and understanding to combat intolerance and hatred. The clearer and fuller the revelations of the grace and truth of Christ become to us, the more egregious is our offense if we fail to embrace and place our faith in him.
It records Jesus’ extended farewell discourse to his disciples, taking place on the eve of his crucifixion. In this chapter, Jesus discusses the role of the Holy Spirit, the joy experienced by believers, and his triumph over the world.
PREPARED FOR PERSECUTION
The Gospel of John portrays Christ as the anticipated Messiah and Son of God, descending to earth as a Jew to revive God’s chosen people. However, those who should have accepted their Messiah turned him away: “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.” Jesus pledges in John 16 to reunite with his followers and leave them three precious gifts: his Spirit, joy, and peace. The disciples were distressed by the idea of Jesus leaving them.
These things have I spoken unto you
Christ warned his followers about the world’s hatred, persecution, and lack of respect for their teachings, so they could be prepared and protected against these challenges;
that,
says He,
ye should not be offended:
When Christ spoke of the hardships his disciples would face, it was to prepare them, not discourage them. By knowing in advance, they were less likely to be caught off guard, offended, or tempted to give up. This shows Christ’s caring nature and teaches us to support each other in similar situations.
Anticipation of persecution in the future has been prophesied and warned about. The likelihood of facing hardship due to one’s beliefs or actions has been foreseen and acknowledged. (1-6) The promise of the Holy Spirit, and his office, brings hope and guidance to those who seek spiritual fulfillment. Through the presence of the Holy Spirit, believers are empowered to live a life of faithfulness and purpose, finding strength in times of uncertainty and comfort in moments of despair. As the divine helper and advocate, the Holy Spirit serves as a constant source of wisdom and inspiration, leading individuals towards a deeper connection with their faith and a greater understanding of God’s love. With the Holy Spirit as a guiding force, believers are able to navigate life’s challenges with courage and grace, trusting in the divine plan that unfolds before them.(7-15) The significance of Christ’s departure and return holds profound spiritual and theological implications for believers around the world. This pivotal event marks a crucial moment in the narrative of salvation and redemption, symbolizing hope, renewal, and a promise of eternal life. The teachings and teachings of Christ’s departure and imminent return serve as a guiding light in the lives of many, offering comfort, strength, and guidance in times of uncertainty and adversity. Through reflection on this divine journey, individuals are able to deepen their faith, foster a sense of community, and cultivate a deeper connection with the teachings of love, compassion, and forgiveness that Christ exemplified during his time on earth. (16-22) Encouragement to prayer. (23-27) Explore the profound revelations of Christ as he unveils his true essence and divine purpose through self-discovery. Delve into the transformative journey of introspection and enlightenment, as Christ uncovers the depths of his being and showcases his boundless wisdom and compassion. Embrace the awe-inspiring process of self-realization and witness the unfolding of Christ’s true identity in all its glory and grace.(28-33)
It is within the realm of possibility for individuals who harbor true enmity towards God’s service to put on a facade of fervent dedication to it.
Villanies committed by persecutors will not be absolved by invoking the name of God; true change can only come from genuine repentance and transformation of the heart. Simply using religious language as a shield to justify wrongdoing only serves to further perpetuate sin and oppression. It is essential to truly reflect on one’s actions and seek forgiveness from those who have been harmed, rather than hiding behind empty words of piety. The true essence of faith lies in humility, compassion, and accountability, not in superficial gestures or empty rituals.
Just as Jesus found purpose and fulfillment in his suffering through the fulfillment of Scripture, his followers can also draw strength and meaning from their own trials by turning to the wisdom and guidance found in the sacred texts. By aligning their experiences with the teachings and prophecies of Scripture, believers can find solace, hope, and direction, knowing that their struggles are not in vain but serve a greater purpose in the divine plan.
He did not inform them earlier, as his presence was sufficient for teaching, guiding, and comforting them; at that time, they did not require the assurance of the Holy Spirit’s companionship. Silence will fall upon us when we question the origins of our troubles. It will bring us peace to question their destination, as we are certain that their efforts are always aimed at benefiting others. It is essential for melancholy Christians to remember that amidst the clouds of sadness, there is always a ray of joy and gladness waiting to be embraced. It is a common mistake to focus solely on the darkness and ignore the whispers of happiness that surround us. Embracing both the shadows and the light is crucial in finding peace and contentment in our hearts.
The disciples’ overwhelming attachment to the pleasures and comforts of this earthly existence caused deep sorrow in their hearts. Their excessive love for the temporary joys of this present life blinded them to the eternal and spiritual truths of their faith, leading to a profound sense of loss and longing for something greater beyond the material world. Nothing more hinders our joy in God than the love of the world and the sorrow of the world which comes from it. The distractions and temptations of worldly desires and the resultant sadness can cloud our relationship with God and prevent us from fully experiencing His love and grace.
Sending the Spirit was to be the fruit of Christ’s death, which was his going away. His bodily presence could be only in one place at one time, but his Spirit is everywhere, in all places, at all times, wherever two or three are gathered together in his name. The presence of his Spirit transcends physical limitations, making his love and guidance accessible to all who seek it. This eternal and omnipresent Spirit serves as a source of comfort, strength, and unity for believers, fostering a sense of community and connection that extends beyond physical boundaries. The power of his Spirit unites individuals in faith, creating a shared sense of purpose and a deep spiritual bond that transcends time and space.
Witness here the divine task of the Holy Spirit, starting with the vital act of reproving and convincing. Convincing is a unique and powerful capability that belongs solely to the Spirit, as it is his expertise and divine mission. The sequence of his ministry is clear: first, he convinces of truth, and then he brings comfort and assurance to the heart. The Spirit works to deeply penetrate the hearts of humanity, revealing the reality of sin and its impact on individuals and society as a whole. It goes beyond mere words, engaging with the conscience and innermost thoughts of individuals to bring about a true understanding and conviction of wrongdoing. The Spirit deeply convicts us of the reality, consequences, irrationality, defilement, and resulting separation from God that sin brings. It reveals the root of sin as our corrupted nature, and ultimately highlights the destructive outcome of sin, which is death. The Holy Spirit reveals the universal guilt before God, while also highlighting the righteousness of Jesus as the Christ. Through Christ’s righteousness, we are justified and saved, with the Holy Spirit guiding us to where this righteousness can be found and how we can attain acceptance as righteous in the eyes of God.
Christ’s ascension demonstrates the acceptance of the ransom and completion of righteousness, providing believers with justification. The judgement is on the prince of this world who has been condemned. All will be restored when the power of the one who caused chaos is dismantled. Through Christ’s victory over Satan, we find assurance that no other force can withstand him. And of the day of judgment. The arrival of the Spirit would bring immeasurable benefits to the disciples. The Holy Spirit serves as our guiding light, not just revealing the path to us, but also accompanying us with ongoing support and influence. Being led to a deeper understanding of truth goes beyond mere knowledge; it involves experiencing the essence, flavor, and transformative power of truth within our hearts.
He shall enlighten with unwavering truth, withholding no valuable insight, as he unveils the mysteries of the future. All the gifts and graces of the Spirit, all the preaching, and all the writing of the apostles, under the influence of the Spirit, all the tongues, and miracles, were intended to glorify Christ and spread His message of love and salvation to all corners of the world, inspiring believers to live out their faith with passion and conviction, and serving as a testament to the power and glory of God’s presence among His people.
It behoves every one to ask whether the Holy Spirit has begun a good work in his heart, for without a clear understanding of our guilt and danger, we will never fully appreciate the true value of Christ’s salvation. Understanding the depth of our true selves allows us to appreciate the profound value of the Redeemer. We should seek a deeper understanding of the Redeemer and cultivate stronger feelings towards Him by consistently praying for and relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, allowing us to form a more intimate connection with our Savior.
The Holy Spirit will always be a source of solace and strength, shielding them from the impact of any worldly hardships or spiritual obstacles, keeping their happiness pure and unwavering. Believers are blessed with either joy or sorrow, depending on their perception of Christ and the signs of his presence. While sorrow looms over the ungodly with unyielding force, the faithful are promised an enduring inheritance of joy that remains untouchable by any external forces.
Where now is the joy of those who betrayed our trust, and the sorrow of those who believed in their deceit?
Asking in Christ’s name demonstrates humility and reliance on Christ as our Righteousness, recognizing our dependence on Him for all blessings from God. Our Lord had hitherto spoken in short and weighty sentences or in parables, the import of which the disciples did not fully understand. However, after his resurrection, he intended to plainly teach them about the Father and the way to him, through his intercession. This marked a significant shift in his communication style, as he delved deeper into the spiritual teachings that would guide his followers on the path towards salvation.
The continuous emphasis placed by our Lord on offering petitions in his name serves as a constant reminder of the profound impact of Christ’s mediation. Through this, we are guided to acknowledge our own shortcomings and the unparalleled significance of Christ’s sacrifice, allowing us to approach God with confidence and humility.
And let us always bear in mind the profound unity between the Father and the Son, as we approach the Father in the sacred name of Christ and recognize the Son as the embodiment of God in human form, bringing reconciliation to all humanity. This oneness between the Father and the Son serves as a reminder of the inseparable bond and divine nature of Christ, emphasizing the interconnectedness and harmony within the Holy Trinity.
The Divine nature did not abandon the human nature; instead, it provided unwavering support, infusing Christ’s sufferings with profound comfort and significance. Through this divine connection, Christ’s sacrifices carried immense meaning and purpose, serving as a beacon of hope and redemption for humanity. The intertwining of these two natures epitomizes the depth of compassion and sacrifice, illuminating the transformative power of faith and divine intervention in times of struggle and despair. And as long as we are graced with the presence of God’s favor, we shall find true happiness and peace, even if the entire world were to abandon us.
Peace in Christ is indeed the ultimate source of true peace, where believers find solace and tranquility. It is through His grace that we establish harmony with God, and as a result, experience inner peace within our own hearts and minds. The profound sense of calm and assurance that comes from being in Christ surpasses all other forms of peace, offering a sense of security and serenity that resonates deeply within our souls. In Christ, we find a refuge from life’s challenges, a sanctuary of peace that nurtures our spirits and brings a sense of wholeness and contentment.
Embracing His love and grace allows us to navigate the storms of life with a sense of peace that transcends all understanding, guiding us through tumultuous times with unwavering faith and assurance. We can find strength in the knowledge that Christ has already conquered the challenges of the world ahead of us. It is important to remain humble and vigilant, for overconfidence can lead to our downfall. Let us take inspiration from His triumph and approach each obstacle with faith and caution. Watch and pray without ceasing to avoid being left to ourselves in times of temptation.
John 17:1
These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee
John 17:2
As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
John 17:3
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
Find Your Spiritual Path
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you
Expanding further on the concept of Jesus preparing his disciples for his departure and the gift of the Holy Spirit, it becomes clear in this brief yet powerful passage that Jesus stresses the significance of love as a central theme running through his teachings. He also assures us of the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit, guiding us with wisdom and strength through life’s journey.Jesus reveals the profound and unbreakable bond between Himself, God, the Holy Spirit, and those who believe in Him, illustrating the interconnectedness and unity that lies at the core of the Christian faith.
Understanding the Helper
The Role of the Holy Spirit
In John 14:16-17, Jesus promises to send another Helper, the Holy Spirit, to be with His followers forever. This Helper, also known as the Spirit of Truth, is given to those who believe in Jesus. The Holy Spirit’s role is to guide, teach, and remind believers of Jesus’ teachings, providing them with divine support and comfort. Belief in Jesus is crucial for receiving the Holy Spirit, as it signifies a commitment to follow His commandments and trust in His guidance.
The Holy Spirit acts as an internal guide for believers, helping them to understand and live out the teachings of Jesus. This divine presence ensures that followers of Christ are never alone, as the Spirit continually works within them to foster spiritual growth and obedience to God’s word.
The Promise of the Spirit

I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
The Eternal Presence
Jesus' Promise of the Holy Spirit
In John 14:16, Jesus assures His disciples that the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, will be with them forever. This promise highlights the eternal nature of the Spirit’s presence, distinguishing believers from the world. That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
